Laurel Cottage

Finally, after much renovation, Laurel Cottage is ready for guests!

Laurel Cottage began its existence nearly 150 years ago down in the Savannah community of Jackson County. It is an authentic pioneer log cabin. Though the chinking is now mortar, it was once mud. Originally, the house had only one room. The section with the kitchen and bath was part of an old barn and was added on by us. Imagine living in the one room with six or seven children through a mountain winter with no electricity and no running water...

The little house was disassembled and brought to High Top Mountain in the late 1960s. For years we have reserved it for ourselves, though many of our guests expressed an interest in renting it, especially for honeymoons. As time passed, the cottage became storage for our supplies and eventually accumulated a lot of junk. We finally decided to clean it out, fix it up, and treat it with the care it deserves!

Improvements include winterizing with more insulation in the ceilings and better weatherstripping. New electrical service allowed us to install a heatpump so the house has a year-round heating and cooling system. The floors have been sanded, and the bathroom has been remodeled and brightened.
